Hawaii Pono : A Social History
Published in Paperback by Harcourt (February, 1984)
Author: Lawrence H. Fuchs
Average review score:

pre-statehood sociological history of Hawaii
A magnificent book written by an outsider who had no agendas to fulfill or preconceptions about the subject. Hawaii Pono is the definitive book about the history of territorial Hawaii. It is the study of immigrants from many corners of the world coming together by necessity or wanderlust to create the rainbowed culture that is Hawaii.

Hawaii Postcards

LUAU!
I used these postcards for invitations to my wedding reception. We had a hawaiian luau theme. The guests absolutely loved the postcards and most kept them as keepsakes from the wedding! And the pictures on the postcards are absolutely wonderful! Looking at these postcards is about as close as you'll ever get without actually going to Hawaii.

Great New Hawaii Restaurant Guide
I recently received a copy of Hawaii Restaurant Guide 2003 and have to say that it is the most complete resource of its type I've seen. The reviews have good solid depth and include a lot of back-up cultural information. I now feel that I know what to expect before I walk into one of those places. The money saving tips were an added bonus.

Hawaii Under the Rising Sun: Japan's Plans for Conquest After Pearl Harbor
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (January, 2002)
Author: John J. Stephan
Average review score:

How to think about national security-- a primer
This is true scholarship in service of a great question. A distinguished historian at University of Hawaii, Stephan analyzes the place of Hawaii in Japanese military strategy in WW II. Obviously, this raises the question of the fate of Japanese-Americans during World War II. The issue has received illumination in recent books by Greg Robinson and Eric Muller. Stephan offers a politically incorrect interpretation that indicates that the Japanese military thought they could rely on using American Japanese for their purposes following a successful invasion of Hawaii. The prospect cannot be denied. With internal national security issues more vital than ever, Stephan's book should be on the minds of all serious students and citizens today.

Author: John R. K. Clark
Average review score:

Hawaii's best beaches is very informative.
I've read John Clark's other books, and this one tops them all. It combines the information from all of Hawaii's best beaches in a creative and informative way. I am new to the Hawaii islands, so I also enjoy reading part of the history of the beaches as well as the meaning of the Hawaiian beach names. This book is also complete with beautiful color photos. I would recommend this book to anyone visiting Hawaii. Beaches are Hawaii's greatest asset.
